Howard County is rich in history. John Smith was most likely the first white man to set foot in the area in 1608, however, the first settlers came in 1687. In the late 1700's Elk Ridge Landing was a transfer point for cargo carried by ships to and from England and the Far East. It was the largest colonial port north of Annapolis.
The Ellicott brothers came to the area in 1772 and they brought a considerable amount of change. They convinced farmers to plant wheat in place of tobacco and they built a flour mill to process the wheat. They are also credited with developing Ellicott Mills, a very large milling and manufacturing town. They build roads, briges, and a wharf in Baltimore. Andrew Ellicott surveyed the boundaries for the nation's capitol in Washington, DC.
Savage Mill opened in 1822 and manfactured textiles until 1947. The railroad came to Howard County in the 1830's. The Thomas Viaduct was built in 1835 to carry trains over the Patapsco River near Elkridge. The Bollman Truss Bridge allowed the railroad to service Savage Mill and today it is an historic landmark located behind Savage Mill.
The county remained a farming community into the mid 20th century. In the 1960's James Rouse began purchasing land for a planned community called Columbia. Long Reach was the first village to open in 1973. The plans were to have all types of housing including apartments and low income homes.
